What a European invoice must include
Article 226 of the EU VAT Directive (2006/112/EC) sets out the particulars every VAT invoice must show. This generator covers all of them:
- A unique, sequential invoice number
- The date of issue
- Your full name and address
- Your VAT identification number
- Your client's full name and address
- Client's VAT ID for cross-border B2B supplies
- Description of the goods or services
- Quantity and unit price for each item
- The VAT rate applied and the VAT amount
- Net, VAT and gross totals
- Reverse-charge note where it applies
- Exemption reference for small businesses
This tool helps you prepare a correctly formatted invoice; it is not tax advice. VAT rules vary by country, sector and customer type — for anything unusual, confirm with your accountant or tax office.
Standard VAT rates in the EU (2026)
Every EU member state sets its own standard VAT rate. When you select your country in the tool, its standard rate is filled in for you — reduced rates for specific goods and services can be entered as a custom rate.
For comparison: the United Kingdom applies 20%, Switzerland 8.1% and Norway 25%. The United States has no VAT (state sales taxes may apply instead).
Frequently asked questions
Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes — completely. There is no sign-up, no trial and no watermark on the PDF. The whole tool runs in your browser, so your business and client data never leaves your device.
What is the reverse charge, and when do I use it?
If you supply services to a business customer in another EU country, you normally do not charge VAT. Instead, your customer declares the VAT in their own country — the "reverse charge" under Article 196 of the EU VAT Directive. Your invoice shows 0% VAT and must carry a reverse-charge note, which this tool adds automatically when you select that option. You will need your customer's valid VAT ID.
What is the small-business exemption?
Many EU countries let very small businesses skip charging VAT under a national scheme — Germany's §19 UStG (Kleinunternehmerregelung) is the best-known example, with equivalents in France, Austria, the Netherlands and elsewhere. If you are registered under such a scheme, select "Small-business exemption": the invoice shows 0% VAT with the exemption stated, as the law requires.
Which VAT rate should I charge a client in another EU country?
For B2B services, the reverse charge usually applies (0% on your invoice). For B2C digital services sold across EU borders, VAT is due at the customer's country rate, normally declared through the One Stop Shop (OSS). For domestic sales, use your own country's rate. The rules differ for goods, so check with your accountant if you ship products across borders.
Can I invoice in pounds or dollars?
Yes — EUR, GBP, USD, CHF and 12 further currencies are supported. Note that some tax authorities require the VAT amount to also be expressed in your national currency when you invoice in a foreign currency.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. The form, the calculations and the PDF are all produced locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to or stored on a server, and closing the tab removes everything.
Does the PDF look professional enough for real clients?
Yes. The PDF uses a clean A4 layout with your business and client blocks, an itemised table, net/VAT/gross totals, your IBAN for payment, and the legally required VAT wording — the same structure used by established invoicing software.
