How to use the Ratio Calculator

  1. Enter the two values of your ratio (A and B).
  2. Optionally enter a total to split in this ratio.

Example: The ratio 500 : 250 simplifies to 2 : 1. Splitting a total of 900 in the ratio 2 : 1 gives 600 for the first share and 300 for the second.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a ratio simplified?

Both sides are divided by their greatest common divisor (decimals are first scaled into whole numbers), giving the smallest whole-number ratio with exactly the same proportion.

What can I split with a ratio?

Money between partners, ingredients in a recipe, time between tasks — anything that must be divided in a fixed proportion.

Does the order matter?

Yes — 2 : 1 is the opposite split of 1 : 2. The first share always belongs to the first value you enter.
