How It Works — The Rule Behind This Time Card

Colorado pays overtime on three triggers — 40 hours a week, 12 hours a day, or 12 consecutive hours — whichever benefits the employee most. The card first turns each shift into paid minutes (clock-out minus clock-in, minus unpaid breaks, with overnight shifts rolled into the next day), optionally rounds punches the way payroll does, and then splits the week under Colorado's rule:

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this time card apply Colorado's overtime rule?

Yes. Unlike the generic flagship card, this page splits your week under Colorado's rule: overtime after 12 hours a day or 40 a week. Premium hours are never double-counted.

What is the minimum wage in Colorado in 2026?

The 2026 Colorado minimum wage is $15.16 per hour for most workers. The card is pre-loaded at that rate — change it to your actual rate and the pay split follows.

How much is a 48-hour week at the Colorado minimum wage?

Six 8-hour days at $15.16: 40.00 regular hours ($606.40) plus 8.00 overtime hours ($181.92) = $788.32 gross before taxes — the exact week pre-loaded in the card above.

What counts as 12 consecutive hours in Colorado?

Colorado owes overtime on whichever basis helps the employee most: 40 hours in a week, 12 hours in a workday, or 12 consecutive hours — the last one matters for split shifts and shifts crossing midnight. This calculator scores hours per day plus the weekly total, so check with payroll if your shifts are split.

Does the card save my week?

Yes — automatically, in your browser's local storage on this device only. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Archive the week when a new one starts; the last 12 archived weeks stay viewable on the same device.

How it works — the formula

The formula: Paid minutes per day = (clock-out − clock-in) − unpaid break. Then: Score each day first, then the week. Every day splits at 12 hours: the first 12 are regular, the rest overtime at 1.5×. Then regular hours still above 40 for the week move into overtime. Gross = (regular × rate) + (overtime × rate × 1.5).

Worked example

Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute unpaid break — 8 paid hours a day, 48 for the week — at the Colorado minimum wage of $15.16/hour: the card totals 48:00 hours — 40:00 regular and 8:00 overtime, for a gross of $788.32 ($606.40 + $181.92). That is the week already loaded in the calculator above.

Frequently asked questions

Can daily and weekly overtime stack on the same hour?

No — that is called pyramiding, and it is not allowed. An hour paid at a daily premium is not counted again toward the 40-hour weekly threshold; you receive whichever treatment benefits you more for that hour, never both.

What changes if my break is paid?

Paid break minutes stay in your paid time instead of coming off the shift. That can move a day or a week across a threshold: a 9:00-to-6:30 shift with a paid 30-minute break holds 9.5 paid hours, not 9.
