How It Works — The Rule Behind This Time Card

Kentucky follows the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) rule and nothing stricter for most private employers: overtime at one and a half times your regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. The card first turns each shift into paid minutes (clock-out minus clock-in, minus unpaid breaks, with overnight shifts rolled into the next day), optionally rounds punches the way payroll does, and then splits the week under Kentucky's rule:

Kentucky minimum wage (2026): $7.25/hour. Kentucky's minimum wage is the federal $7.25. Source for overtime rules: https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/overtime. Source for the minimum wage: US Department of Labor, State Minimum Wage Laws table. Last verified: November 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this time card apply Kentucky's overtime rule?

Yes. Unlike the generic flagship card, this page splits your week under Kentucky's rule: the federal 40-hour rule only. Premium hours are never double-counted.

What is the minimum wage in Kentucky in 2026?

The 2026 Kentucky minimum wage is $7.25 per hour for most workers. Kentucky's minimum wage is the federal $7.25.

How much is a 48-hour week at the Kentucky minimum wage?

Six 8-hour days at $7.25: 40.00 regular hours ($290.00) plus 8.00 overtime hours ($87.00) = $377.00 gross before taxes — the exact week pre-loaded in the card above.

What is Kentucky's seventh-day overtime law?

Separate from the weekly rule, Kentucky requires time and a half for hours worked on the seventh day when an employee works all seven days of a workweek — but only when the week's total passes 40 hours. For most workers the federal rule reaches those hours first; the state law is a backstop, and this calculator applies the federal rule.

Does the card save my week?

Yes — automatically, in your browser's local storage on this device only. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Archive the week when a new one starts; the last 12 archived weeks stay viewable on the same device.

How it works — the formula

The formula: Paid minutes per day = (clock-out − clock-in) − unpaid break. Then: Score the week, not the day. Add up the paid hours in the workweek; the first 40 are regular and everything beyond is overtime. Gross = (regular hours × rate) + (overtime hours × rate × 1.5).

Worked example

Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute unpaid break — 8 paid hours a day, 48 for the week — at the Kentucky minimum wage of $7.25/hour: the card totals 48:00 hours — 40:00 regular and 8:00 overtime, for a gross of $377.00 ($290.00 + $87.00). That is the week already loaded in the calculator above.

Frequently asked questions

Why didn't my 12-hour day produce any overtime?

Because the rule is weekly. Twelve hours in a day is regular time if the workweek ends at 40 hours or less; the premium starts only when the week's total passes 40. States with daily overtime are the exception, not the norm.

What changes if my break is paid?

Paid break minutes stay in your paid time instead of coming off the shift. That can move a day or a week across a threshold: a 9:00-to-6:30 shift with a paid 30-minute break holds 9.5 paid hours, not 9.

Disclaimer: Estimates only — not payroll or legal advice. Your employer's payroll rules and state law control your actual pay. Figures are rounded for display; your pay stub and payroll department are the official record.
