How It Works

Both clocks above are read live from the IANA time-zone database built into your browser — the same rule set your phone uses. “Difference today” is not a fixed fact about this pair of cities: it is computed from the two zones’ offsets right now, which is why it can legitimately read differently if you open this page in a different month.

Sydney is ahead of London by 11 hours in the British winter (Sydney on AEDT, UTC+11) and by 9 hours in the British summer (Sydney on AEST, UTC+10, London on BST, UTC+1). In the shoulder weeks — early April and early October, when only one side has changed — the gap is 10 hours. Sydney’s clocks change on the first Sundays of April and October, in the opposite season to London’s.

The 24-hour table walks the whole of today in Sydney, hour by hour, and prints the matching moment in London — including the rows where London is still on yesterday, or already on tomorrow, which are marked +1 day or −1 day. Those edge rows are exactly the ones people get wrong doing the maths in their head.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the time difference between Sydney and London?

Sydney is ahead of London by 11 hours in the British winter (Sydney on AEDT, UTC+11) and by 9 hours in the British summer (Sydney on AEST, UTC+10, London on BST, UTC+1). In the shoulder weeks — early April and early October, when only one side has changed — the gap is 10 hours. Sydney’s clocks change on the first Sundays of April and October, in the opposite season to London’s.

When it is 9:00 AM in Sydney, what time is it in London?

10:00 PM the previous evening — that is 9:00 AM in Sydney converted on a January day, when Sydney is on daylight time (AEDT, UTC+11) and London is on GMT (UTC+0). Check it any time with the converter above: the answer is worked out from the two zones’ offsets on the date you pick, so it stays right when the clocks change.

Does the Sydney–London time difference change during the year?

Yes, on the clock-change dates.

What is the best time for a call between Sydney and London?

There is honestly no comfortable business-hours overlap: Sydney’s 9-to-5 is London’s night. The workable windows are London early morning (8:00 AM London = 7:00 PM Sydney in January) or London’s evening (9:00 PM London = 8:00 AM Sydney). Pick which side takes the unsocial hour and rotate it.

How are the times on this page calculated?

From timestamps and the IANA time-zone database inside your browser — the live rules for each zone, including daylight-saving start and end dates and southern-hemisphere seasons where relevant. Nothing is hard-coded: open this page on a clock-change day and the clocks, the difference and the 24-hour table all follow the new offsets automatically.

How it works — the maths

Two offsets and one subtraction — the same method the converter at the top of this page runs:

The formula:
Difference = London’s UTC offset − Sydney’s UTC offset, both taken at the moment being converted
London time = Sydney time + difference (crossing midnight moves the date, which the table marks +1 or −1 day)

Worked example

Take 9:00 AM in Sydney, on a January day, when Sydney is on daylight time (AEDT, UTC+11) and London is on GMT (UTC+0). Adding the pair’s difference for that date gives 10:00 PM the previous evening in London. The subtlety is that the difference itself is date-dependent for most pairs: repeat the same conversion in a month when one city has changed its clocks and the answer moves by an hour. That is why this page never prints a single fixed “the difference is X” without the word today next to it.
