A phone compass points to magnetic north, which can sit a few degrees away from true north, so for the most accurate line use the bearing with a map or a compass corrected for magnetic declination. About prayer times in Cairo

Cairo is in Egypt. The times on this page are calculated for the city centre at 30.0444° N, 31.2357° E, and are shown in Cairo's own timezone — Eastern European Time (EET, UTC+2) (Africa/Cairo) — wherever in the world you open the page. Areas across a large city can differ from the centre by a minute or so, and a masjid timetable may add precautionary minutes on top of the calculated times.

The defaults are the ones used across the Loona Islamic Tools site: the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi calculation method (Fajr 18°, Isha 18°) with Hanafi Asr. If your local authority uses a different method, the main Prayer Times tool lets you switch between Karachi, ISNA, Muslim World League, Egyptian and Umm al-Qura methods, choose Shafi Asr instead, or enter exact coordinates for a village or a specific neighbourhood. For a whole month at a glance, see the Monthly Prayer Timetable.

How these times are calculated

Every time on this page is calculated, not copied from a printed table. The built-in prayer engine takes Cairo's latitude and longitude plus the date, and works out the sun's path for that day: Dhuhr is the moment the sun reaches its highest point (solar noon), Sunrise and Maghrib are when the sun sits 0.833° below the horizon, Fajr and Isha are when it reaches the twilight angle of the method — 18° below the horizon for the Karachi default — and Asr is found from the shadow factor of the school (2 for Hanafi, 1 for Shafi). Where summer twilight never fully ends at far-northern latitudes, an angle-based rule caps Fajr and Isha at a share of the night. The Hijri date is read from the Umm al-Qura calendar built into your browser. All of it runs in your browser; nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which calculation method is used for prayer times in Cairo?

This page uses the Loona Islamic Tools default: the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method (Fajr 18 degrees, Isha 18 degrees) with Hanafi Asr. Egypt's own official method (Egyptian General Authority of Survey, Fajr 19.5 degrees, Isha 17.5 degrees) is available in the main Prayer Times tool and can differ from the times on this page by several minutes. To use a different method - ISNA, Muslim World League, Egyptian General Authority or Umm al-Qura - open the main Prayer Times tool and change the method there.

Is the Asr time in Cairo Hanafi or Shafi on this page?

Hanafi. The Hanafi school starts Asr when an object's shadow is twice its length plus its noon shadow (factor 2), which is the later of the two common Asr times. The Shafi, Maliki and Hanbali schools use factor 1, giving an earlier Asr. If you follow the Shafi school, open the main Prayer Times tool and switch the Asr setting to Shafi.

What is the Qibla direction from Cairo?

The Qibla bearing from Cairo is 136.1 degrees clockwise from true north, and the straight-line distance to the Kaaba in Makkah is about 1,287 km. It is the initial bearing of the great-circle (shortest) path to the Kaaba at 21.4225 N, 39.8262 E.

Why do these times differ by a few minutes from my local masjid in Cairo?

Three reasons cover almost every difference: the masjid may use a different calculation method or twilight angles (see the first question), it may add precautionary minutes to the calculated times, and these times are computed for the city-centre coordinates, while your neighbourhood can sit a minute or so either side. Matching the method and Asr school removes nearly all of the gap.

How are the Cairo prayer times calculated?

They are calculated fresh on your device from the sun's position for Cairo's coordinates (30.0444° N, 31.2357° E) on the date shown - not copied from a printed table. Dhuhr is solar noon, Sunrise and Maghrib are when the sun is 0.833 degrees below the horizon, Fajr and Isha use the Karachi twilight angle of 18 degrees, and Asr uses the Hanafi shadow factor of 2. The Hijri date shown uses the Umm al-Qura calendar; a local moon-sighting announcement can differ from it by a day.
