Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Audio Cutter free?
Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit imposed by us on how much you cut.
Are my audio files uploaded to a server?
No. Your file is decoded and trimmed 100% inside your browser with the Web Audio API. It never leaves your device.
Which formats can I cut?
Any format your browser can decode - MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG in all modern browsers. The trimmed result downloads as a standard WAV file that plays everywhere.
Will cutting reduce the sound quality?
No. The tool copies the exact samples between your start and end points - there is no re-compression of the part you keep, it is simply saved as WAV.
Can I cut a very long recording?
Yes, but very long or very large files depend on your device's memory, because the whole file is decoded in the browser. Most songs, lectures and voice notes work fine.
How it works
Your file is opened right inside your browser and decoded into raw sound samples with the Web Audio API - nothing is uploaded to any server. The waveform you see is drawn from those samples, and the part between the two gold handles is the part you keep.
Worked example
You recorded a 4-minute lecture clip but only the middle explanation matters. You load the file, drag the start handle to 0:35 and the end handle to 2:10 (or type 35 and 130 in the boxes), press Play Selection to check it, and download a clean 1 minute 35 second WAV of exactly that explanation.
Because the export copies the original samples between your two points instead of re-recording them, the part you keep sounds exactly as it did in the original file.
More questions
How precise is the cut?
You can type start and end times to a tenth of a second, and drag the waveform handles for fine adjustments. The export uses the exact sample positions, so the cut lands where you set it.
Why does the download come out as WAV instead of MP3?
WAV is the format your browser can create natively without extra software, and it keeps the audio exactly as decoded. If you need MP3 afterwards, any standard converter can turn the WAV into MP3.
Can I listen to just the selected part before downloading?
Yes - press Play Selection and only the highlighted part of the waveform plays, so you can check the cut before you export it.
What happens if my file will not load?
The file may be in a format your browser cannot decode, or it may be corrupted. Converting it to WAV or MP3 in any player app first usually fixes the problem.
