Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Voice Recorder free?
Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up and no recording limit imposed by us.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. Your voice is recorded and kept only in your browser's memory on your own device. It is saved only if you press the download button - nothing is ever sent to a server.
When is my microphone switched on?
Only after you press Record and give permission. The moment you press Stop, the microphone is switched off again.
What format is the recording?
Your browser records in its standard web audio format (usually WebM). It plays in all modern browsers and apps, and can be converted to MP3 or WAV with the Audio Cutter or any converter.
What happens if I close the tab before downloading?
The recording is lost, because it only exists in the tab's memory. Always download your recording before closing the page.
How it works
When you press Record, the page asks your browser - not a server - for access to your microphone. Your browser captures your voice using its built-in MediaRecorder technology and keeps the sound in the memory of this tab only. Pressing Stop switches the microphone off immediately and turns the captured sound into a playable recording, still entirely on your device.
Worked example
A teacher wants to send her class a short spoken explanation of tomorrow's lesson. She opens this page on her phone, presses Record, speaks for about a minute, presses Stop, listens once to check, and downloads the file to share with her students - without installing any app and without her voice ever passing through anyone's server.
Because nothing is uploaded, recording works even on a slow connection, and there is no account, inbox or cloud folder where your voice could be kept without you knowing.
More questions
Why did the microphone not start?
Your browser needs microphone permission for this site. Check the lock or settings icon in the address bar, allow the microphone, then press Record again. On some phones the permission prompt appears the first time only.
Can I listen to the recording before saving it?
Yes - as soon as you press Stop, a player appears with your recording so you can listen back before deciding to download or delete it.
How long can I record?
There is no limit set by this tool. Very long recordings use more of your device's memory, so for sessions longer than an hour, downloading in parts is safer.
Can I record on my phone?
Yes - any phone browser with microphone access works. Keep the tab open and the screen on while recording for the best result.
