7Z to ZIP Converter - Turn a .7z Archive into a .zip
7Z archives squeeze files impressively small, but almost nothing opens them out of the box - Windows, phones and most colleagues' laptops all need extra software. Converting to ZIP trades a little compression for total compatibility. This tool does the whole conversion in your browser; your files are never uploaded.
How to use the 7Z to ZIP Converter
- Drop your .7z file onto the box above, or click it and pick the file from your device.
- Click Convert to ZIP. The archive is read on your device and every file is repacked with its folder path intact.
- Check the summary: number of files found and the size of the new ZIP.
- Click Download to save the .zip. Anyone can open it with built-in system tools.
How it works
The 7z format uses the LZMA family of compression algorithms, which is why 7z files are often smaller than ZIPs of the same content - and why they need the 7-Zip program (or a compatible tool) to open. This page reads the archive with a WebAssembly build of libarchive running locally in your browser, then writes the contents out again as a classic ZIP using JSZip. The files inside are untouched; only the container changes. Expect the ZIP to be a bit larger than the 7z original - that is the normal price of ZIP's wider compatibility, not lost data.
Worked example
You download backup.7z (210 MB) of project files, but the office laptop has no 7-Zip and no admin rights to install it. Dropped here, the tool repacks its 342 files into backup.zip (228 MB). The ZIP opens with a double-click in Windows Explorer, and every folder is exactly where it was inside the 7z.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this 7Z to ZIP converter free?
Yes - free, no sign-up, no limits and no watermarks.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. A WebAssembly archive engine reads the 7z in your browser and JSZip writes the ZIP - everything happens on your device.
Why is the ZIP bigger than the 7Z file?
7z compression (LZMA2) is stronger than ZIP's DEFLATE, especially on similar files packed together. A ZIP that is 5-15% larger is normal. Nothing is lost - the contents are byte-for-byte identical.
My 7Z is password-protected or has an encrypted header. Will it work?
No. Encrypted 7z archives cannot be opened by this tool - including ones where even the file list is encrypted. Remove the password in 7-Zip first, then convert the unprotected copy.
Can I convert ZIP back into 7Z here?
Not with this tool. Browser-side 7z creation is unreliable, so we do not offer a ZIP to 7Z converter rather than ship one that can produce broken archives. The TAR File Creator and ZIP File Creator cover archive creation.
