RAR to ZIP Converter - Turn a .rar Archive into a .zip
Someone sends you a .rar file, and your phone - or a colleague's Windows PC without WinRAR - cannot open it. ZIP is the universal format: Windows, macOS, Android and iOS all open it built-in. This tool converts RAR to ZIP entirely in your browser, so the archive never travels to a server first.
How to use the RAR to ZIP Converter
- Drop your .rar file onto the box above, or click it and pick the file from your device.
- Click Convert to ZIP. The tool reads the archive on your device and repacks every file, keeping the folder structure.
- Check the summary: how many files were inside and the size of the new ZIP.
- Click Download to save the .zip file. It opens with the built-in tools of any modern system.
How it works
RAR is a proprietary archive format created by the makers of WinRAR, so most systems cannot open it without extra software. This page loads a WebAssembly build of the libarchive library (about 1 MB, loaded only when you convert) to read the RAR archive in your browser's memory, then uses JSZip to write the same files and folders into a fresh, standard ZIP with DEFLATE compression. Nothing about the files themselves changes - only the wrapping. One direction only: no free tool can create a genuine RAR archive, because the RAR compression format is licensed - which is exactly why converting away from RAR is so useful.
Worked example
A friend sends photos.rar (48 MB) from an old Windows PC. Your phone refuses to open it. You drop it here, the tool finds 126 photos in 3 folders, and produces photos.zip (47.8 MB). The ZIP opens straight from your Files app, folders intact, and you can forward it to anyone - no WinRAR needed on either side.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this RAR to ZIP converter free?
Yes - free, no sign-up, no limits and no watermarks.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with a WebAssembly archive engine and JSZip. Your archive and its contents never leave your device.
Can this tool create a RAR file, or convert ZIP back to RAR?
No - and no free tool can. Creating RAR archives requires the licensed WinRAR encoder. This tool only converts FROM RAR to ZIP, which is the direction that makes files easier to open and share.
My RAR is password-protected. Will it work?
No. Password-protected (encrypted) RAR archives cannot be opened by this tool. Remove the password in a desktop archiver such as WinRAR or 7-Zip first, then convert the unprotected copy.
Will the folder structure and file names stay the same?
Yes. Every file is repacked at the same path it had inside the RAR, including nested folders. Multi-part RAR sets (.part1.rar, .part2.rar...) are not supported - join them into a single archive first.
