Text Shadow Generator — CSS Text Effects with Live Preview
A whisper of shadow lifts a headline off a busy background; a hard offset makes retro type pop. This tool lets you see both at real headline size before committing.
How to use the Text Shadow Generator
- Type your headline and size it like the real thing.
- Drag the shadow: down-right reads as light from top-left (the natural default).
- Copy the text-shadow declaration.
How it works
text-shadow takes offset-x, offset-y, blur and colour — no spread (unlike box-shadow). A blur of 0 gives the hard retro offset; raising it melts the shadow into a glow, especially with a bright colour on a dark background (as in the preview).
Worked example
A poster headline in white on teal gains a gold 3px offset shadow — suddenly it looks printed, not typed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Text shadow vs box shadow?
Box shadow follows the element’s rectangle; text shadow follows the letterforms themselves. Headlines want text shadow.
How do I make a glow?
Set offsets to 0, raise the blur, and use a bright colour on a dark background.
Can I stack shadows?
Yes — repeat the value pattern separated by commas in CSS for outlines and 3D stacks.
Does it hurt readability?
Keep shadows subtle for reading text; go bold only for display headlines.
