About the classic meme style

The top-and-bottom caption style comes from the earliest viral image macros: Impact-style lettering, all capitals, white fill and a heavy black outline. The outline is what makes it work — it separates the letters from bright and dark parts of the photo at the same time, so the joke stays readable even on a busy background. This generator follows that recipe exactly, then lets you bend it: pick any text colour, adjust the size, or turn capitals off for a cleaner quote-card look.

Two habits make memes land better. Keep each line short — one line that fits across the image beats three lines of small text — and leave the auto-fit option on so a long caption shrinks instead of running off the edges. If a line still feels crowded, shorten the words — the size slider then gives you the final control.

How it works

Your image is drawn onto a browser canvas at its full original size. Each caption is measured and, with auto-fit on, the font is reduced step by step until the widest line fits within 94% of the image width. Text is then drawn twice at each position: once as a thick black outline (about one twelfth of the font size) and once as the coloured fill on top. When you download, the canvas is saved as a PNG — the sharpest format for text over photos.

Worked example

On a photo 1200 px wide with the size set to 9%, the starting font is 1200 × 9 ÷ 100 = 108 px, with an outline of 108 ÷ 12 = 9 px. If your top line is too wide at 108 px, auto-fit steps it down (106, 104, 102…) until it fits inside 1128 px of width — so the caption never touches the edges.

Why does my long text get smaller?

That is the auto-fit setting doing its job: it shrinks the font until the line fits the width of the image. Turn "Shrink long text to fit" off if you prefer the exact size you set — but the ends of a long line may then run off the photo.

Can I make a meme without a photo?

Yes. Use one of the plain background buttons — white, black, teal or gold — and type your text. That is an easy way to make quote cards and announcement images.

Can I use my meme commercially?

The tool places no restrictions on what you make. Just make sure you own the photo you start from, or have the right to use it — memes built on other people's copyrighted images are their owners' concern, not something any generator can license for you.
