How to change a photo background in 3 steps
- Load your photo โ drop it above or click to browse. Nothing is uploaded; the photo stays on your device.
- Pick a colour and replace โ choose white, blue, light grey or red, set the tolerance, and press the replace button. The tool flood-fills inwards from all four edges, replacing only pixels similar to the corner colour.
- Clean the edges and download โ fix hair edges and missed spots with the Erase and Restore brushes, undo if needed, then download as PNG or JPG.
About changing photo backgrounds honestly
Many ID, passport, visa and exam forms ask for a photo on a specific plain background โ most often white, sometimes blue, light grey or red. If your photo was taken against a plain, even wall of a different colour, this tool can swap that background for the colour you need: it samples the colour at the corners, then flood-fills from all four edges, replacing only connected pixels that are similar within the tolerance you set. The person in the middle is never touched by the fill, because the fill stops where the colour changes.
Please use it with honest expectations: this is not an AI background remover. It works best on plain, even backgrounds with even lighting. Busy rooms, strong shadows and colours very close to skin or clothing tones will leak or leave halos, and hair edges may need the brush to finish cleanly. For a busy background, re-taking the photo against a plain wall will almost always give a better result than any quick edit.
How it works
The tool loads your photo onto a canvas at its natural size (the display is scaled to fit your screen). The replace button runs an iterative, stack-based flood fill seeded from every edge pixel: each popped pixel is compared with the corner colour using a Euclidean colour-distance function, and only pixels whose distance is within the tolerance threshold are recoloured and expanded to their neighbours. The brush tools paint directly โ Erase paints the chosen colour, Restore copies pixels back from a stored copy of your original photo โ and Undo keeps the last canvas snapshot so one mistake never ruins the edit.
Worked example
A portrait taken against a light blue wall (corner colour about RGB 170, 195, 220) with tolerance 32 gives a distance threshold of 32 รท 100 ร 441.67 โ 141. Wall pixels within that distance of the corner colour are replaced with white #ffffff, while the face and shirt โ much further away in colour โ stop the fill. Two missed patches near the hair are then painted with the Erase brush, and the result downloads as a clean white-background photo.
Frequently asked questions
Is this photo background changer free?
Yes โ completely free, with no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you edit.
Is this an AI background remover?
No. It is a colour-based flood fill plus manual brushes. It works best on plain, even backgrounds; it cannot intelligently separate a person from a busy scene the way AI tools claim to.
Why did the fill change part of my face or clothes?
The tolerance is too high, or that area has a colour very close to the background. Lower the tolerance, press Undo, and try again โ then use the Restore brush to paint back any area that was changed by mistake.
Why are there rough edges around the hair?
Hair edges mix hair and background colours into in-between pixels, so any colour fill leaves a fringe. Zoom in with a small Erase brush to paint the fringe to the new colour, or Restore it if you removed too much.
Which background colour do I need?
White is the most common requirement (passports, NADRA, most visas). Some systems ask for blue, light grey or red โ always check the instructions of the form you are submitting to, and pick that exact colour here.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. All editing happens 100% in your browser using the Canvas API. Your photo never leaves your device.
