How to crop an image in 3 steps
- Load your photo — drop it above or click to browse. Nothing is uploaded; the photo stays on your device.
- Choose a ratio and position the box — pick Free or a ready ratio such as 1:1 or 35 × 45, drag the box to move it and drag the gold corner handle to resize it. Rotate or flip first if the photo needs straightening.
- Crop & download — the selected region is exported at its full original resolution as a JPG or PNG.
About cropping images
Cropping removes the edges of a photo so the subject fills the frame and the picture matches the shape its destination expects. Social platforms, exam portals and ID applications all ask for specific aspect ratios — a square 1:1 for profile pictures, 16:9 for video thumbnails, 9:16 for stories and reels, and 35 × 45 for passport photographs. Cropping to the ratio before you upload stops the website from cutting the picture in an uncontrolled way, which is how heads and documents get chopped off in automatic previews.
This cropper always exports the selected region at its natural, original resolution — never upscaled and never reduced to the small on-screen preview size. The live readout under the photo shows the exact pixel size your download will have, so you can check it against a portal's minimum size before you save. Rotate and flip are applied to a working copy of the image first, so a sideways phone photo can be corrected and then cropped in one visit.
How it works
Your photo is drawn onto an off-screen canvas after any rotation or flip you apply. The crop box sits on top of the on-screen preview, and every preview pixel is mapped back to original pixels with a single scale factor (original width ÷ displayed width). On download, exactly that mapped region is drawn at natural resolution onto a fresh canvas and saved.
Worked example
A 4000 × 3000 px photo is displayed 800 px wide, so the scale factor is 4000 ÷ 800 = 5. A crop box covering the middle 400 × 300 display pixels maps to 400 × 5 = 2000 px wide and 300 × 5 = 1500 px high in the original — and the download is exactly 2000 × 1500 px.
Frequently asked questions
Is this image cropper free?
Yes — completely free, with no signup, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you crop.
Does cropping reduce the quality of my photo?
No. The download is taken from the original full-resolution image, not from the small screen preview, and JPG export uses high quality. The cropped area keeps every original pixel inside it.
What does the 35 × 45 ratio mean?
It is the width-to-height ratio of a standard passport photo (35 mm wide, 45 mm tall). Choose it, frame the face inside the box, and the crop will have exactly the passport shape at whatever resolution your original allows.
Can I rotate a sideways photo?
Yes. Use Rotate Left or Rotate Right to turn the working copy in 90° steps, and Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical to mirror it. The crop box then works on the corrected image.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Cropping, rotating and flipping all happen 100% in your browser using the Canvas API. Your photo never leaves your device.
Which format should I download, JPG or PNG?
JPG is best for photographs and online forms because the file is small. PNG is better when the image has text, sharp edges or transparency you need to keep.
