Mind Map Maker — Free Online Mind Mapping with Auto-Layout

In short: the Mind Map Maker grows a tidy diagram from one central idea: click any node, add children and siblings with buttons or keyboard, and the tree re-layouts itself automatically — then export a PNG or save the map as JSON to continue later.

Lesson planning, essay structure, project breakdowns, revision notes — a mind map turns a tangled topic into one picture. Start with the big idea in the middle and branch outward; the tool keeps everything neat while you think.

Click a node to select it. Drag empty space to pan. The layout tidies itself automatically after every change.

Private by design: everything in this tool happens 100% in your browser with JavaScript. Your data, photos and designs are never uploaded to a server, never stored and never seen by us - close the tab and everything is gone.

How to use the Mind Map Maker

  1. Click the central node and type your main idea in the Selected node text box.
  2. Press Add child (or the Tab key) to branch from the selected node; press Add sibling (or Enter) for a node at the same level.
  3. Click any node to edit its text. Drag empty space to pan, and use Zoom or Fit to frame the whole map.
  4. Download a PNG to share or print, or Save as JSON and load it back later to keep editing.

How it works

The map is a tree of nodes. A tidy layout algorithm measures each branch: a branch is as tall as its children stacked with even spacing, parents sit centred beside their children, and every level gets its own column — so boxes never overlap, however the tree grows. Edges are drawn as smooth curves. Export renders the same layout onto a fresh canvas sized exactly to the map, and JSON save/load stores the whole tree as plain text you can keep anywhere.

Worked example

A teacher planning a science unit starts with "The Water Cycle" in the centre, adds children Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation and Collection, then gives each two detail nodes. The finished PNG becomes the class handout, and the JSON file lets her extend the same map next term.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add nodes quickly?

Select a node and press Tab for a child or Enter for a sibling. The buttons above the canvas do the same on touch screens.

Can I save a mind map and continue later?

Yes — Save as JSON downloads the whole map. Use the Load picker to open it again and keep editing.

Will big maps stay readable?

The layout never overlaps boxes, and you can pan, zoom and use Fit to see everything. The PNG export is sized to the full map, so nothing is cut off.

Is my mind map private?

Completely — the map lives in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored by us.

Can I change the colours?

Yes — five themes (Teal & Gold, Ocean, Sunset, Grape and Mono) restyle the whole map instantly.
