Microphone Test - Check Your Mic Online Free

In short: the Microphone Test shows your voice level live and records a 5-second test clip you can play back - completely free, and your microphone is only used locally on your device.

Two minutes before an online class, interview or meeting is the worst time to discover your microphone is dead. Start the mic below, speak normally, watch the meter move, then record a 5-second test and listen to exactly what others will hear.

Level: 0%
Volume: silent
Status: off
Private by design: your microphone is only used locally, inside your own browser. The meter is drawn on your device and the test clip stays in your browser's memory - nothing is uploaded, stored or heard by us. Press Stop Microphone and the mic switches off completely.

How to test your microphone

  1. Choose your microphone in the list above (headsets and USB mics appear as separate devices; the list shows real names after you allow permission once).
  2. Click "Start Microphone" and allow microphone access when the browser asks.
  3. Speak at your normal volume. The meter should move and bounce in the green and gold. If it stays flat, see the troubleshooting question below.
  4. Click "Record 5-Second Test", say a sentence, then press play on the clip that appears - that is exactly how you sound to everyone else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Microphone Test free?

Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up and no limit on how often you test.

Is my voice uploaded or recorded by you?

No. Your microphone is only used locally, inside your own browser. The level meter is drawn on your device, and the 5-second test clip stays in your browser's memory unless you choose to download it. Nothing is sent to any server.

The meter does not move - what is wrong?

Work through these in order: allow microphone permission when the browser asks; pick the right microphone in the selector above (headsets often appear as a separate device); check the mic is not muted on the device itself; and speak at normal volume about 20-30 cm from the mic. On Windows and macOS, also check the system sound settings show the same microphone picking up sound.

Which microphone is being tested?

The one chosen in the selector above. Before you allow permission, browsers hide device names, so the list fills in properly after you start the mic once. If you plug in a headset, use 'Refresh list' by restarting the test.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The test runs in any modern browser - Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari - on computer or phone. The page must be open over HTTPS, which it is.

How it works

When you press Start, the browser asks your permission and opens the microphone you selected. This page then measures the incoming sound 60 times a second on your own device and turns it into the moving meter: green for normal speech, gold for loud, red only when you are close to distortion. The 5-second test is recorded by the browser itself and played straight back to you - no server is involved at any point.

Worked example

You have an online interview in ten minutes. You plug in your headset, choose it in the list, and start the mic - the meter sits at 0% while the laptop's built-in mic (still selected) hears nothing. You switch the selector to the headset, the meter jumps to around 60% as you speak, and the 5-second playback confirms your voice is clear. Interview saved.

A healthy speaking level sits roughly between 40% and 80% on this meter. Much lower usually means you are too far from the mic or the wrong device is selected; pinned at 100% means you are too close or the mic gain is too high.

More questions

Why do I hear an echo or squeal during the test?

That is feedback: your speakers are playing sound that the microphone hears again. Use headphones during the test, or turn your speaker volume down.

The browser says the microphone is blocked - how do I unblock it?

Click the lock or settings icon at the left of the address bar, find Microphone, and set it to Allow for this site. Then press Start Microphone again.

Can I test a Bluetooth headset microphone?

Yes. Pair it with your device first, then pick it in the selector. Note that Bluetooth mics often sound narrower than wired ones - that is the Bluetooth hands-free profile, not a fault.
