Webcam Test - Preview Your Camera Online Free
Before a class, interview or recording, check what everyone else will see: is the picture sharp, is the light good, is anything embarrassing in the background? Start the camera below and see your preview with honest numbers, not guesses.
How to test your webcam
- Click "Start Camera" and allow camera access when the browser asks.
- Check the preview: you should be centred, well lit from the front, with a tidy background.
- Read the honest numbers under the preview: the actual resolution and frame rate your browser is receiving from the camera right now.
- Click "Take Snapshot" to capture a still photo; download it as a PNG if you want to keep or send it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Webcam Test free?
Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up and no limit on how often you test.
Is my camera image uploaded anywhere?
No. Your camera is only used locally, inside your own browser. The preview, the measurements and any snapshot stay on your device - a snapshot is only saved when you click Download. Nothing is sent to any server.
Why does the preview move like a mirror?
The preview is mirrored by default because that is how you are used to seeing yourself, and it makes framing natural. If you take a snapshot with mirroring on, the photo is saved the way you see it; switch mirroring off if you want the photo exactly as the camera sees the scene (text on clothing will read correctly).
The readout says 720p but my camera is 1080p - why?
The readout shows the resolution the browser is actually receiving, which can be lower than the camera's maximum. Lighting, USB bandwidth, the browser and other apps using the camera all affect it. Close other apps using the camera, improve the light, and restart the test to give it the best chance of reaching full resolution.
No camera was found - what should I check?
Check the camera is plugged in (or not covered/disabled on a laptop), that no other app is using it, and that you allowed camera permission for this site in the browser's address-bar settings. On Windows, also check Settings > Privacy > Camera allows desktop apps.
How it works
When you press Start, the browser asks your permission and opens your camera, asking it for the best quality it can offer. This page then reads the camera stream's own settings - the exact width, height and frame rate being delivered - and shows them to you directly, with no estimation. The snapshot copies the current frame onto a drawing canvas on your device and turns it into a standard PNG image.
Worked example
You are about to record a lesson with a new USB webcam that claims 1080p. You start the test: the picture looks soft and the readout says 1280 x 720 at 30 fps. You close the other app that was using the camera, add a lamp in front of you, and restart the test - now the readout shows 1920 x 1080. You take a snapshot to double-check the framing, and record your lesson knowing exactly what your students will see.
The numbers matter because meeting apps often show you a small preview that hides the truth. Measuring the real stream tells you whether a soft picture is the camera, the light, or another app stealing the quality.
More questions
The picture is dark or grainy - how do I fix it?
Almost always: light. Face a window or put a lamp in front of you (never behind you), and give the camera a second to adjust. Grain is the camera raising its sensitivity in low light, so more light means a cleaner picture at the same resolution.
The browser says the camera is blocked - how do I unblock it?
Click the lock or settings icon at the left of the address bar, find Camera, and set it to Allow for this site. Then press Start Camera again.
Can I use my phone as the camera for this test?
Yes - open this page in your phone's browser and it will test the phone's camera directly. To use a phone as a webcam for a computer you need a separate companion app on both devices, which is beyond what a web page can do.
