Pixel Avatar Maker — Free Identicon & 5×5 Pixel Avatars
Identicon avatars are little digital fingerprints: type a name or word and a unique-but-stable pixel face appears, identical every time, on every device. Or switch to the custom grid and design your own retro avatar.
How to use the Pixel Avatar Maker
- Type any seed — your name, a username, a random word. The avatar is generated from it instantly.
- Same seed, same avatar: the pattern and colour are pure functions of the text, so your avatar is stable forever without any account.
- Or choose Custom grid and click cells to draw your own; Mirror keeps the classic symmetric look.
- Download at 250, 500 or 1000 px — pixels stay crisp because the export draws whole cells, never a scaled blur.
How it works
The generator hashes the seed (FNV-1a) and uses the hash bits to fill the left half of a 5 × 5 grid, mirrored to the right — the original identicon recipe. The colour is a second hash into a fixed palette. Exports re-render from the grid at the chosen size, so edges stay perfectly sharp.
Worked example
A coding club gives every member a pixel avatar from their username for the club board — no photos needed, everyone recognisable by their pattern.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an identicon?
A visual hash: a small geometric avatar generated from text, so the same text always produces the same image. GitHub-style default avatars work this way.
Will my avatar ever change?
Only if your seed changes. The algorithm is fixed and runs locally, so the same seed gives the same avatar forever.
Can I draw a non-symmetric avatar?
Yes — in Custom grid mode, draw freely and simply do not press Mirror.
Why 5 × 5?
It is the identicon standard: large enough to be distinctive, small enough to read at tiny sizes.
