Audio Reverser - Play Audio Backwards Online Free

In short: the Audio Reverser flips any audio file end-to-end so it plays backwards - one click to preview, one click to download the reversed sound as WAV.

Curious what your voice sounds like backwards, making a reversed-cymbal effect for a video, or checking a song for hidden backwards messages - load any file and this tool reverses the whole recording, start to finish.

Click to choose an audio file
or drag & drop it here - MP3, WAV, M4A or OGG
Private by design: your audio file is decoded and reversed 100% in your browser with the Web Audio API. It is never uploaded to a server, never stored and never heard by us - close the tab and everything is gone.

How to reverse an audio file

  1. Click the box above or drag your audio file into it - MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG all work.
  2. Press "Play Reversed" to hear the whole file backwards, or "Play Original" to compare.
  3. Click "Download Reversed WAV" and the backwards version saves to your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Audio Reverser free?

Yes. It is completely free with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit imposed by us.

Are my audio files uploaded to a server?

No. Your file is decoded and reversed 100% inside your browser with the Web Audio API. It never leaves your device.

Does reversing change the length or quality?

No. The reversed file has exactly the same duration, sample rate and channels as the original - the samples are simply played in the opposite order, so nothing is lost or re-compressed.

Which formats can I reverse?

Any format your browser can decode - MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG in all modern browsers. The result downloads as a standard WAV file that plays everywhere.

Why do reversed voices sound so strange?

Because sounds naturally fade out (like a piano note) but reversed sounds swell in and stop suddenly. Your brain notices that unnatural envelope immediately - it is also why reversed cymbals are a classic transition effect in music and video.

How it works

Your file is opened right inside your browser and decoded into raw sound samples with the Web Audio API - nothing is uploaded to any server. The tool then writes the samples into a new recording in exactly the opposite order, first sample last and last sample first, for every channel, and saves the result as a WAV file.

Worked example

You record yourself saying "Loona Audio Tools" and load the clip here. Pressing "Play Reversed" plays the phrase backwards - it sounds like a mysterious foreign language. You download the WAV, and if you ever reverse that file again with this same tool, you get your original recording back, sample for sample.

Reversing twice always restores the original exactly, because no samples are changed - only their order.

More questions

Can I reverse only part of a file?

This tool reverses the whole file. To reverse just a section, first cut that section out with the free Audio Cutter on this site, then reverse the cut file here.

Why is the downloaded file bigger than my MP3?

The export is WAV, the uncompressed format your browser can create natively. It keeps the audio exactly as reversed, but the files are larger than MP3. Any standard converter can turn the WAV into MP3 afterwards.

Can I reverse a video file?

No - this tool works on audio only. If your browser can decode the audio track of a video it may load, but the result is always an audio WAV file.
