How it works
The tool opens your PDF inside your browser with pdf-lib - the file is never uploaded - embeds the standard Helvetica font, and draws the number directly onto every page. It works out each page's own width and height, then places the text 36 points in from the side and 24 points up from the bottom edge (30 points down from the top), in dark gray at the size you choose. The numbering follows your style - plain 1, Page 1, 1 of 10 or - 1 - - and counts upward from your starting number, then the document is saved as a new file with -numbered added to its name.
Worked example
You have a 24-page project report to submit, and page numbers are required. You choose the style 'Page 1', position Bottom centre and 11 pt size, leaving Start from number at 1. The downloaded report-numbered.pdf carries 'Page 1' through 'Page 24' centred at the foot of every page, ready to print or email.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave the cover page unnumbered?
There is no skip option - numbers are drawn on every page. A common workaround is to extract the cover with our Extract Pages tool, number the remaining pages here, and then merge the cover back in front with Merge PDF.
Which font and colour are the numbers printed in?
Helvetica in a dark gray, at the 9 to 12 pt size you select. The neutral styling suits most documents and stays readable without drawing attention away from the content.
If I start from 5, what does the '1 of 10' style show?
The style follows your start number, so a 10-page document starting at 5 is labelled 5 of 14, 6 of 14 and so on up to 14 of 14 - the total adjusts so the last page still matches its number.
Do the numbers work on landscape or mixed-size pages?
Yes. The position is calculated separately from each page's own width and height, so a landscape page gets its number in the correct corner or centre just like a portrait page.
Can the numbers be removed afterwards?
They become a permanent part of each page's content, just like printed text, so they cannot simply be switched off later. Keep your original file if you might need an unnumbered copy.
