Edit PDF Info (Metadata) Online - Free

In short: the Edit PDF Info tool shows a PDF's hidden metadata - title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer - and lets you change the title, author, subject and keywords before saving a copy.

Every PDF carries hidden information: the title shown in browser tabs and search results, the author's name, and more. Files made from scans or exports often have wrong or empty values. Inspect and fix them here before you share.

Private by design: your files are processed 100% in your browser with JavaScript. They are never uploaded to a server, never stored and never seen by us - close the tab and everything is gone.

How to edit PDF metadata

  1. Choose a PDF - its current metadata appears in a summary grid.
  2. Edit the title, author, subject and keywords fields.
  3. Click "Save PDF with New Info" and download the updated copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PDF metadata?

It is descriptive information stored inside the file - title, author, subject and keywords - used by readers, search engines and document systems to label the file.

Does editing metadata change the pages?

No. Only the information fields change; page content is untouched.

Why does the title matter?

The metadata title is what shows in browser tabs, PDF reader title bars and many search results - a clear title makes documents look professional.

Can I remove the author name?

Yes. Clear the field and save - the saved copy will carry an empty author value.

How it works

When you choose a file, the tool reads its current document information inside your browser with pdf-lib - nothing is uploaded - and shows you the title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer already stored in the file. The Title, Author, Subject and Keywords boxes are pre-filled with those values for editing. On save, the tool writes your new values into the document's information, refreshes the modification date to today, and downloads the result with -updated in the name. Only the hidden information is changed; not a single page is touched.

Worked example

A downloaded handout is named scan_2026.pdf and its properties show no title and a scanner program as the producer. You set Title to 'Physics Notes - Chapter 4', Author to your own name, Subject to 'Class 10 Physics' and Keywords to 'physics, notes, chapter 4'. The updated file now displays 'Physics Notes - Chapter 4' in a reader's title bar and properties panel, so students can identify it at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

Which fields can I actually edit here?

Title, Author, Subject and Keywords. Creator and Producer are shown so you can see what the file currently carries, but they are display-only in this tool - that is an honest limit of what it changes.

How should I type the keywords?

Separate them with commas, exactly as shown in the box - for example 'invoice, 2026, office'. The tool tidies up extra spaces and empty entries for you when it saves.

Does the modification date change too?

Yes. Saving stamps the document with the current date and time as its modification date, which matches what most desktop editors do when a file's information is updated.

Where will I see the new title?

Open the file in any PDF reader and check its Document Properties; most readers also show the document title in the window or tab instead of the raw file name, and search tools use it when indexing the file.

Can I edit the information of a password-protected PDF?

No - the file must be openable for its information to be read and rewritten, and a protected file will show an error. Remove the password in the app that created the file first.
