Org Chart Maker — Free Organisational Charts from Text
Drawing org charts box by box is slow and they break with every restructure. Typing the hierarchy as text is fast, and the layout — who sits over whom — is computed for you, however wide the tree grows.
How to use the Org Chart Maker
- Edit the text: the first line is the top role. Indent each line by two spaces (or a tab) for every level below its manager.
- Watch the chart rebuild instantly — managers are centred over their whole team automatically.
- Fix names and structure in the text until the chart reads exactly right.
- Download the PNG — it exports at the chart’s full natural size, never squashed.
How it works
The layout is a tidy-tree algorithm: every subtree is as wide as its children side by side, and each parent is centred above its subtree. Connector elbows drop from a parent to a shared rail above its children. Because width is computed from the tree itself, exports are sized to the real chart — large organisations simply get a wider, still-sharp PNG.
Worked example
A school principal types the staff structure in five minutes — Principal, Vice Principal, two heads of department, teachers and support staff — and the chart goes straight into the school prospectus.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I show two people at the same level?
Give them the same indentation under the same manager line.
What if my text indent is wrong?
The rule is simple: a line belongs to the nearest line above it with less indentation. Keep indents consistent (two spaces per level) and the tree builds itself.
Can the chart be very wide?
Yes — wide trees export as wide PNGs at full resolution. The on-screen preview scales down to fit, the download never does.
Is my staff data private?
Completely — the text is parsed only in your browser.
