Timeline Maker — Free Timelines for History, Projects & Stories
History lessons, company stories, project milestones, a child’s first years: a timeline turns a list of dates into a journey the eye can travel. Type the events; the axis does the rest.
How to use the Timeline Maker
- Write one event per line in the format: Date | Title | Short description.
- Events whose date contains a year (like 1969 or 2026) are placed in year order automatically; other events keep your written order.
- Cards alternate above and below the axis — check the text fits, shortening descriptions if needed.
- Download the PNG for your lesson, wall or report.
How it works
Each event’s position is evenly spaced along the axis in sorted order — timelines here are ordinal (sequence matters, gaps are even), which keeps cards readable even when years are unevenly spaced. Cards are clamped inside the canvas so first and last events never clip.
Worked example
A history teacher builds "The Story of Flight" in ten lines — balloons, the Wright brothers, jets, Concorde, drones — and projects the timeline as the lesson’s opening image.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are events placed by exact year distance?
No — spacing is even, in date order. This ordinal style keeps every card readable; the dates printed on the cards carry the exact years.
What date formats work?
Anything containing a four-digit year sorts by that year. Without a year, your line order is kept.
How much text fits a card?
A short title plus about three lines of description. Keep descriptions tight for the cleanest result.
Is my timeline private?
Yes — built entirely in your browser.
