Polar Area Chart Maker — Free Polar Area (Coxcomb) Charts
Invented to make army mortality statistics undeniable, the polar area chart excels when categories are a cycle — months, seasons, hours — and size differences must shout.
How to use the Polar Area Chart Maker
- Type your labels and numbers into the grid, or paste CSV into the box below the chart and press Apply CSV.
- Adjust the title, legend and per-series colours until the chart reads clearly at a glance.
- Press Download chart as PNG and drop the image into your document, slides or post. Use Copy my data as CSV to save your figures for later.
How it works
Angles are equal (360° ÷ number of categories, like a pie), while each segment’s radius scales with its share relative to the largest category — so big values dominate the picture by design. The chart is drawn by hand on an HTML canvas by Loona’s shared chart engine — no chart library and no server. Everything is computed locally, so your numbers never leave your device.
Worked example
A clinic charts monthly visits as a coxcomb for its annual review; the long June segment starts the staffing conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Polar area vs pie?
In a pie, the angle carries the value. In a polar area chart, angles are equal and the radius carries the value — better for cycles like months.
Which series is used?
The first series, one segment per row.
Is the area proportional to value?
The radius scales with share, so area grows faster than value — that visual emphasis is the point of the coxcomb, and the legend always shows exact values.
Is it free?
Yes — free, private, no watermark.
