EPUB Reader - Open & Read EPUB Ebooks Online

In short: choose an EPUB ebook from your device and read it right here in your browser - with a chapter list, adjustable text size and a dark theme for night reading. The file is opened on your own device and is never uploaded anywhere. One honest limit: ebooks protected by DRM (most books bought from Kindle, Kobo or Apple stores) cannot be opened, because this reader does not remove or crack DRM.

EPUB is the world's most common ebook format, used by public libraries, Project Gutenberg and most bookstores outside Amazon. Until now you needed a special app to open one. Here you just pick the file: the reader unpacks it on the spot, lists the chapters, shows the pictures inside the book, and lets you read comfortably on any phone, tablet or computer.

Drop your .epub file here, or click to choose it

The book opens on this device only - nothing is uploaded, and you can keep reading even if your connection drops.

Private by design: everything in this tool happens 100% in your browser with JavaScript. Your ebook is never uploaded to a server, never stored and never seen by us - close the tab and everything is gone.

How to use the EPUB Reader

  1. Click the box above (or drag and drop) and choose an .epub file from your device.
  2. The reader shows the book's title, author and a chapter list. Pick any chapter from the list to jump straight to it.
  3. Use the Previous / Next chapter buttons to read through the book, Aโˆ’ / A+ to change the text size, and the Dark button for night reading.
  4. When you finish, just close the tab - or use "Close book" to open a different ebook.

How it works

An EPUB file is really a small website zipped into one file: a set of chapters written in XHTML, plus pictures and a map of the book. This reader unzips the file in your browser, reads the map (the package file, called the OPF) to find the book's title, author and the correct chapter order, and reads the table of contents - the EPUB 3 navigation document, or the older NCX file in EPUB 2 books. Each chapter is then cleaned before it is shown: scripts and anything that could run code or phone home are stripped out, while the book's own pictures are loaded safely from inside the file. Because everything runs locally, even a large novel opens in a second or two.

Worked example

You download a free public-domain novel from Project Gutenberg and open it here. The reader shows the title and author, lists all 24 chapters, and opens chapter 1. On the bus you tap "Next chapter" to keep reading, enlarge the text once, and switch on the dark theme as it gets dark outside - no app installed, no account created, and the file never left your phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this EPUB reader free?

Yes - completely free, with no sign-up, no account and no limit on how many ebooks you open.

Is my ebook uploaded to a server?

No. The file is opened and read 100% in your browser with JavaScript. It never leaves your device, is never stored by us, and works even if you go offline after the page has loaded.

Why won't my ebook open? (DRM)

Most ebooks bought from stores such as Kindle, Kobo or Apple Books are protected by DRM (copy protection). This reader cannot open DRM-protected files, and it does not remove or crack DRM. DRM-free EPUB files - for example public-domain books from Project Gutenberg or books sold as DRM-free by the publisher - open normally.

Which EPUB versions are supported?

Both EPUB 2 and EPUB 3. The reader understands the EPUB 3 navigation document and the older NCX file in EPUB 2 books, and shows pictures stored inside the book.

Can I read on my phone or tablet?

Yes. The reader is fully responsive, and you can enlarge the text and switch to the dark theme for comfortable night reading on any screen size.
