Character Counter - With & Without Spaces

In short: the Character Counter shows exactly how many characters your text has - with spaces, without spaces - and how much room is left in common limits like posts and SMS.

A post that is three characters too long, an SMS that silently becomes two messages, a meta description cut off mid-word - character limits are everywhere. Type below and see every count and remaining limit update live.

Private by design: everything in this tool happens 100% in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to a server, never stored and never seen by us - close the tab and everything is gone.

How to use the Character Counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. Check the live counts: characters with spaces, without spaces, and words.
  3. Watch the limit trackers - green room to spare, or exactly how many characters you must cut.

How it works

The tool counts every character including spaces and line breaks, then also counts the text with all whitespace removed. For SMS it applies the real network rule: a single message holds 160 characters, and longer texts are sent as linked segments of 153 characters each - which is why a 161-character message costs double. Limit trackers for X posts (280), SMS (160), meta titles (60), meta descriptions (160) and LinkedIn posts (3,000) update as you type.

Worked example

Your product announcement is 173 characters long. The counter shows the SMS tracker at '2 segments' and the X tracker with 107 characters to spare - so you shorten the text to 158 characters and it fits one SMS segment again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the character counter free?

Yes - 100% free, no sign-up and no character limit on what you can paste.

Why do spaces count in SMS but not everywhere?

SMS and X count every character including spaces. Some school and exam forms ask for counts without spaces, so we show both.

Why does a 161-character SMS count as 2 messages?

Long SMS messages are split into 153-character segments with a linking header, so 161 characters need two segments and are billed as two messages.

Does it count emojis correctly?

Most emojis count as 2 characters in JavaScript and on X - the counter follows the same rule, so what you see matches what the platforms count.

Is my text stored?

Never. All counting happens in your browser on your device.
