Add Line Numbers to Every Line

In short: the Line Numbering tool puts a number in front of every line of your text - you choose the starting number, the step, zero-padding and the separator.

Numbered lines make lists, registers, scripts, code and lyrics easy to refer to: 'see line 12' beats 'somewhere in the middle'. Paste your text, set the numbering style, and copy the finished, numbered text.

Private by design: everything in this tool happens 100% in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to a server, never stored and never seen by us - close the tab and everything is gone.

How to use the Add Line Numbers

  1. Paste your text - every line will get a number.
  2. Set the start, the step (use 5 or 10 for reference numbering), padding and separator.
  3. Click Add Numbers, then copy or download the numbered text.

How it works

Each line receives the current counter value followed by your separator. With zero-padding on, the width is calculated from the largest number, so 7 lines give 1-7 but 120 lines give 001-120 - keeping a tidy right-aligned column in fixed-width text. Skipping blank lines leaves them truly blank and does not spend a number on them, which keeps paragraph structure readable in numbered documents. The step option (number every line 5, 10, 15...) is the classic style for legal documents, scripts and exam papers.

Worked example

A 4-line poem with start 1, step 1 and dot separator becomes: '1. Roses are red', '2. Violets are blue', '3. Sugar is sweet', '4. And so are you' - ready to discuss line by line in class.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the line numbering tool free?

Yes - completely free, no sign-up.

Can I number only every fifth line, like legal documents?

Yes - set the step to 5: consecutive lines then receive 5, 10, 15 and so on, exactly the reference style used in legal documents and scripts.

What does zero-padding do?

It makes all numbers the same width (007, 042, 120) so columns line up neatly in monospace text.

Can I remove numbers later?

Paste the numbered text into Find and Replace with pattern mode and the pattern ^\d+\.\s - or simply keep your original; numbering never touches it until you copy the result.

Is my text uploaded?

No - numbering happens in your browser.
