Word Counter - Count Words, Characters & Reading Time

In short: the Word Counter counts the words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in your text as you type, and estimates how long it takes to read or speak aloud.

Essays, speeches, blog posts and application forms all come with word limits. Paste or type your text below and every count updates live - no button to press, nothing uploaded, and the estimate of reading and speaking time helps you plan presentations and videos.

Private by design: everything in this tool happens 100% in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to a server, never stored and never seen by us - close the tab and everything is gone.

How to use the Word Counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the box - counting starts immediately, there is nothing to submit.
  2. Read the live totals: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines.
  3. Use the reading-time and speaking-time estimates to check your text fits its limit or time slot.

How it works

The counter splits your text on whitespace to find words, counts sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?) to estimate sentences, and treats blank-line-separated blocks as paragraphs. Reading time assumes an average adult speed of 200 words per minute and speaking time 150 words per minute - the same averages used by most presentation tools. Everything is calculated by JavaScript in your browser the moment you type, so it works even if your connection drops.

Worked example

You paste a 640-word scholarship essay. The counter shows 640 words, 3,912 characters, 41 sentences and 6 paragraphs, with a reading time of about 3 minutes 12 seconds and a speaking time of about 4 minutes 16 seconds - perfect for the 5-minute spoken introduction you have to give with it.
