Image to Text Converter - Extract Text from an Image (OCR)
Notes on a whiteboard, a paragraph in a printed book, a screenshot full of text you need to quote - retyping is slow and error-prone. Choose an image below and the recognised text appears in the box, ready to edit, copy or download. This version reads English; the first conversion downloads the English language data (about 11 MB) from this website, and your browser caches it for next time.
How to use the Image to Text Converter
- Choose an image file - a scan, screenshot or photo with printed text. You can also drag and drop the file onto the panel.
- Press Extract Text. The first time, your browser downloads the English language data (about 11 MB); after that it is cached and conversions are quick.
- Watch the progress percentage, then edit the result right in the box if needed.
- Copy the text, or download it as a .txt file.
How it works
OCR (optical character recognition) scans the shapes in your image and matches them against a trained model of printed characters. This tool uses Tesseract.js, the browser version of the well-known open-source Tesseract engine, with its English LSTM model. Everything - the engine and the language data - is served from this website and executed by your own browser, so no image data ever travels to a server. Clear, flat, well-lit printed text gives the best results; handwriting, fancy display fonts and complicated tables with merged cells are recognised less reliably, so a quick proofread is always worth it.
Worked example
You photograph a printed school notice about a parents' meeting. The tool extracts 214 words in a few seconds - meeting date, time and venue all correct - and you paste the text straight into a message instead of typing the whole notice out by hand. One blurry word in the photo came out wrong and needed a one-letter fix, which is typical: fast, and worth a quick check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The OCR engine (Tesseract.js) is stored on this website and runs entirely in your browser. Your image never leaves your device, and nothing is sent to us or to any third party.
Why does the first conversion take longer?
On first use your browser downloads the English language data (about 11 MB) from this website. Your browser caches it, so later conversions start almost immediately and even work offline.
Which languages are supported?
This version recognises English text. More languages are planned for a future update.
How accurate is the result?
On clear printed text - scans, screenshots and sharp photos - accuracy is typically 95% or better. Handwriting, decorative fonts, low light and complex tables with merged cells are harder and may need manual correction, so always proofread important documents.
Which image formats can I use?
PNG, JPG (JPEG), WebP and BMP files all work. For best results use a straight, well-lit image where the text is horizontal and as large as possible.
