Sentence Counter - Count Sentences, Paragraphs & Words

In short: the Sentence Counter counts the sentences, paragraphs, words and characters in your text as you type, and shows your average sentence length and your longest sentence.

Long, tangled sentences are the number one reason readers give up on a page. Paste or type your text below and watch the sentence and paragraph counts update live - then use the average sentence length to spot writing that needs splitting up. Nothing is uploaded; everything is counted on your own device.

Private by design: everything in this tool happens 100% in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to a server, never stored and never seen by us - close the tab and everything is gone.

How to use the Sentence Counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the box - counting starts immediately, there is nothing to submit.
  2. Read the live totals: sentences, paragraphs, words and characters.
  3. Check the average words per sentence and the longest sentence - long averages usually mean the text is hard to read.

How it works

A sentence is counted each time a sentence-ending punctuation mark - a full stop (.), exclamation mark (!) or question mark (?) - closes a piece of text that contains letters or numbers. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by a blank line. The average sentence length is simply your word count divided by your sentence count. Everything is calculated by JavaScript in your browser the moment you type, so it works even if your connection drops.

One honest note: abbreviations such as "Dr." or "e.g." contain full stops, so a text full of abbreviations may show a slightly higher sentence count than a human would report. For ordinary essays, articles and speeches the count is exact.

Worked example

You paste a 480-word blog draft. The counter shows 24 sentences in 5 paragraphs - an average of 20 words per sentence, with one marathon sentence of 47 words. You split that one sentence into three, and the average drops to a comfortable 18 words per sentence: the same ideas, far easier to read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this sentence counter free?

Yes - completely free, with no sign-up, no word limit and no daily cap.

How does the tool decide where a sentence ends?

It looks for sentence-ending punctuation - full stops, exclamation marks and question marks - followed by more text. Abbreviations like "Dr." can occasionally be counted as an ending, which is true of almost all online counters.

What counts as a paragraph?

Any block of text separated from the next block by a blank line counts as one paragraph. Single line breaks inside a block do not start a new paragraph.

What is a good average sentence length?

For general readers, 15-20 words per sentence is comfortable. Above 25 words on average, readers start to struggle; academic and legal writing often runs longer by design.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Counting happens 100% in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
