Speaking Time Calculator - Time Your Speech or Script
Nothing is worse than a speech that overruns its slot - or ends embarrassingly early. Paste your script, choose your speaking pace, and see the delivery time to the second. Planning the other way round? Type your time limit and the tool tells you exactly how many words to write.
How to use the Speaking Time Calculator
- Type or paste your speech, presentation or video script into the box - timing updates as you type.
- Choose your speaking pace: slow (110 wpm), conversational (130-150 wpm) or fast (170 wpm). When in doubt, pick 140 wpm.
- Optional: type your time limit in minutes to see how many words fit it - trim or extend your script until the numbers match.
How it works
Speaking time is your word count divided by your speaking pace in words per minute (wpm): minutes = words ÷ wpm. Everyday conversation runs at about 130-150 wpm; careful presenters who pause for emphasis speak nearer 110-130 wpm, and excited fast talkers can pass 170 wpm. The reverse calculation - how many words fit a target duration - is words = minutes × wpm. Everything runs in your browser; your script never leaves your device. Tip: real delivery includes pauses, applause and the occasional lost place, so aim to finish about 10% under your limit.
Worked example
Your class presentation script has 910 words. At a conversational 130 wpm it takes exactly 7 minutes to deliver. Your slot, though, is 5 minutes - the calculator shows that 5 minutes at a typical 140 wpm fits about 700 words, so you cut roughly 210 words (one long example) and your talk lands on time with room for questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is speaking time calculated?
The tool counts the words in your script and divides by your speaking pace in words per minute. A 700-word script at 140 wpm takes 5 minutes to deliver.
How many words is a 5-minute speech?
At a conversational pace of 130-150 wpm, a 5-minute speech is about 650-750 words. Type 5 in the target-duration box for the exact figure at your pace.
What speaking pace should I choose?
Choose 110 wpm for a slow, formal or second-language delivery, 130-150 wpm for normal conversation and presentations, and 170 wpm only if you genuinely talk fast. If you are unsure, 140 wpm is the safest middle estimate.
Should I leave room for pauses?
Yes. Pauses, laughter, applause and slide changes all eat time. Aim for a calculated time about 10% below your limit - for a 10-minute slot, prepare about 9 minutes of script.
Is my script uploaded anywhere?
No. Timing happens 100% in your browser. Your script never leaves your device.
