Typing Test - Check Your Speed in Words Per Minute
Typing is a skill you use every day, but few people ever measure it. Choose Easy, Medium or Hard below, click into the typing box and start - the timer begins with your first keystroke. Correct letters turn green, mistakes turn red, and your WPM, accuracy and CPM update as you go.
How to use the Typing Test
- Choose a difficulty level - Easy for a warm-up, Hard if you want numbers and punctuation in the mix.
- Click into the typing box and start typing the text shown above it. The 60-second timer starts automatically with your first keystroke.
- Watch the live figures: time left, WPM, accuracy and CPM. Green letters are correct, red ones are mistakes - backspace and fix them if you like.
- When the time runs out (or you finish the whole text), your final results appear. Hit Restart to try again with the same text, or Another text for a fresh one.
How it works
The test compares every character you type with the sample text, position by position. Your speed uses the standard typing-test formula: WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Dividing by five treats one "word" as five characters including spaces, which is how typing speeds have been measured for decades - it makes your score comparable with any other standard test. Accuracy is the share of typed characters that are correct, and CPM is simply the total characters typed per minute.
Worked example
You type for the full 60 seconds and enter 300 characters, of which 285 match the sample. Your accuracy is 285 ÷ 300 = 95%. Your WPM is (285 ÷ 5) ÷ 1 minute = 57 WPM, and your CPM is 300 ÷ 1 = 300 CPM. If you had typed the same 285 correct characters in 30 seconds, your WPM would double to 114 - speed and accuracy both count.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this typing test free?
Yes - completely free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many times you can take the test.
How is WPM calculated?
WPM uses the standard typing-test formula: (correct characters typed / 5) / minutes. Dividing by 5 treats an average word as five characters, including spaces, so scores are comparable between tests.
What is a good typing speed?
The average adult types around 40 WPM. Office jobs usually ask for 50-80 WPM, and professional typists reach 90-120 WPM. Accuracy above 95% matters more than raw speed for most real work.
Does the test work on a phone or tablet?
Yes, it works in any modern mobile browser. For a true measure of your keyboard speed, take the test with a physical keyboard - on-screen keyboards will naturally score lower.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
No. The test runs 100% in your browser. What you type is never uploaded, stored or seen by us.
