Syllable Counter - Count Syllables in Words & Text
Syllables shape poetry, song lyrics, speeches and easy-reading text. Paste your text below and see the total syllable count, the average per word, and a word-by-word breakdown - counted live as you type, with nothing uploaded.
How to use the Syllable Counter
- Type or paste your text into the box - syllables are counted as you type, there is nothing to submit.
- Read the totals: syllables overall, syllables per word on average, and the word count.
- Scroll to the breakdown table to see exactly how many syllables each word was counted as - handy for fixing a poem line that feels off.
How it works
The counter looks at each word and counts its vowel sounds. A run of vowels together (like the "eau" in "beautiful") usually makes one syllable, a silent final "e" is ignored (as in "make"), and a final "-le" after a consonant adds one back (as in "table"). Words with no vowel sound still count as one syllable, because every spoken word has at least one. Like every automatic counter it is a close estimate - a few unusual words, names and abbreviations can be counted one syllable off.
Worked example
You type the haiku line "an old silent pond". The counter finds 5 syllables: an (1), old (1), si-lent (2), pond (1) - exactly the 5 a haiku first line needs. The full poem check takes seconds instead of counting on your fingers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this syllable counter free?
Yes - completely free, with no sign-up, no word limit and no daily cap.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. Counting happens 100% in your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
How accurate is the syllable count?
Very close for ordinary English words. It follows the standard vowel-group rules, but unusual names, abbreviations and words like "rhythm" can occasionally be off by one - treat it as a fast, reliable estimate.
Can it check a haiku for me?
Yes. Paste the whole poem and use the per-word breakdown to check each line adds up to 5, 7 and 5 syllables.
Does it count syllables in other languages?
It is tuned for English spelling rules. It will still produce a count for other Latin-script languages, but the result may be less accurate.
