Paragraph Counter - Count Paragraphs in Any Text

In short: the Paragraph Counter counts the paragraphs in your text and shows the words and sentences inside each one, so you can spot bloated or stubby paragraphs at a glance.

Teachers set paragraph limits, editors cut long ones, and readers skim walls of text. Paste your writing below to count its paragraphs and see the size of each - one giant paragraph or a healthy spread is obvious the moment you look.

Private by design: everything in this tool happens 100% in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to a server, never stored and never seen by us - close the tab and everything is gone.

How to use the Paragraph Counter

  1. Paste or type your text into the box - paragraphs are counted live, with nothing to submit.
  2. Check the headline numbers: total paragraphs, average words per paragraph, longest and shortest.
  3. Use the per-paragraph table to find the paragraph that needs splitting - or the one-line paragraph that needs company.

How it works

A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next block by a blank line - the same rule word processors and essay checkers use. The counter splits your text on blank lines, then counts the words and sentences inside each block. Single line breaks inside a block do not start a new paragraph; only an empty line does.

Worked example

You paste a 600-word blog draft. The counter shows 5 paragraphs, but paragraph 3 holds 310 words - more than half the article. Splitting it at the topic change gives 6 balanced paragraphs and a page readers can actually scan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this paragraph counter free?

Yes - completely free, with no sign-up and no length limit.

What counts as a paragraph?

Any block of text separated by a blank line. Pressing Enter twice starts a new paragraph; a single line break does not.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything is counted in your browser - your text never leaves your device.

Why does my pasted text show fewer paragraphs than in Word?

Some documents use single line breaks or spacing instead of blank lines between paragraphs. Add a blank line between blocks and the count will match what you see.

Can I see which paragraph is longest?

Yes - the table lists every paragraph with its word and sentence counts, and the summary highlights the longest and shortest.
