Classroom Group Maker β Fair Groups in One Click
Random groups end the friendship-bloc problem and the "why am I always with them?" debate β the computer decided, fairly, in front of everyone. Saving the roster here (rather than re-typing it) is what makes it a classroom tool rather than a generic team picker.
How to Use It
- Type or paste the class list, one name per line, give it a name and Save β it stays in this browser for every future lesson.
- Choose grouping: students per group (e.g. 4), a number of groups (e.g. 6), or pairs.
- Make groups: names are shuffled thoroughly, then dealt into balanced groups β sizes never differ by more than one where avoidable, and a lone leftover student is merged rather than left alone.
- Reshuffle with another click, or print the grouping for group-work records.
How It Works
Grouping starts from a FisherβYates shuffle, so every arrangement is equally likely. For size-based grouping the shuffled list is dealt into chunks; if that would leave a final group of one, a student is moved from the previous group so nobody works alone. For a set number of groups, students are dealt round-robin, keeping group sizes within one of each other. Saved lists live only in your browser's local storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from a generic team generator?
The roster is the point: class lists are saved by name ("Class 6B") and reloaded in one click, grouping is by the ways teachers actually ask for it, and the lone-student rule protects the child who would otherwise be left solo. It is built for a named class, not a one-off list.
Are the groups ability-balanced?
They are random, which over a term balances itself. If you need ability mixing, make groups, then use the seating-chart or your own judgement to swap individuals β true skill-balanced grouping needs data this tool deliberately does not collect.
Where are saved lists stored?
Only in this browser on this device (local storage). Clearing browser data deletes them; lists are never uploaded anywhere.
