Classroom Timers โ Countdown, Exam Clock & Stopwatch
Timers are classroom management in its purest form: a visible countdown ends the "how long do we have?" questions and makes transitions calm. The visual bar matters most โ pre-readers cannot use a digital clock, but everyone understands a bar that is disappearing.
Countdown Timer
The shrinking bar is the visual timer โ young children can see time passing without reading numbers.
Exam Timer
Stopwatch
How to Use It
- Countdown: set minutes and seconds, press Start. The ring and bar shrink together; the display turns red in the last 30 seconds and a chime sounds at zero.
- Exam timer: enter the time the exam ends. The screen shows the end time, the current time and a large time-remaining clock โ everything invigilators write on the board, without the chalk.
- Stopwatch: for races, experiments and timed drills, with lap times for comparing attempts.
- Tip: use your browser's fullscreen button (usually F11) for a true classroom-screen display.
How It Works
All three timers run from your device's clock. The countdown tracks remaining time in quarter-second steps so the ring and bar move smoothly; the exam timer recomputes the difference between now and the end time you set, so it can never drift; the stopwatch measures real elapsed milliseconds and formats them to tenths of a second. The end-of-countdown chime is synthesised with the WebAudio API โ no audio files needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why both a ring and a bar?
Different children read different displays. The ring suits a focused "time left" glance; the long shrinking bar is the classic visual timer used with younger children and SEN classes, where the message is simply: when the green is gone, time is up.
Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
The countdown and exam timer are based on clock differences and stay accurate; browsers may pause screen updates in background tabs, but the displayed time corrects itself when you return. For exams, keep the tab visible.
Can I get a sound at the end?
Yes โ the countdown plays a clear chime at zero (and repeats it once). Make sure the device is not muted; browsers also require you to have pressed Start first, which you have.
