Seating Chart Maker โ Plan the Room, Fairly
A seating plan is classroom management drawn as a map. The shuffle keeps it honest, the locks keep it humane: some placements are pastoral decisions, and a good tool respects them instead of randomising them away.
Click a name below, then click a desk to place them. Click a desk's ๐ to lock it โ locked seats keep their student when you shuffle the rest.
How to Use It
- Set the grid to match your room (rows and desks per row) and press Build grid. The board marker shows the front.
- Paste the student list. Unplaced names appear as chips above the grid.
- Click a name, then a desk to place that student. Click a placed student to remove them; use ๐ on any desk to lock it.
- Shuffle students to fill or re-fill every unlocked desk at random. Locked seats are untouched. Print the result for your folder and the classroom door.
How It Works
The chart is a grid of seats, each either empty, filled, or filled-and-locked. Shuffling collects the names that are not locked into a seat, shuffles them, and deals them into the unlocked seats in order; any names that do not fit are reported so you can add desks rather than lose a student silently. Everything happens in the page โ the plan is not saved, so print it to keep it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why lock seats?
Real classrooms have fixed points: a student who must sit near the front, two students who must be kept apart, a wheelchair space. Lock those desks first, then let the shuffle arrange everyone else around them.
Can I keep two students apart automatically?
Not automatically โ place and lock one of them where you want them, then shuffle; if the other lands too close for comfort, shuffle again or swap by clicking. You stay the judge of the room.
Is the chart saved?
No โ print it or screenshot it. Seating plans change often, and this tool deliberately keeps no record of where children sit.
