Group Sort Game โ Put Every Item in Its Group
Sorting is how young learners build categories โ animals vs plants, solids vs liquids, odd vs even. A digital sort gives instant, patient feedback and can be replayed until the categories feel obvious.
Tap an item, then tap the category box it belongs in. Tap a placed item to send it back.
How to Use It
- Write a category line ending with a colon, then its items on the next line, separated by commas. Repeat for each category.
- Start sorting: all items appear in one pool, in mixed order.
- Tap an item, then tap a category to place it. Tap a placed item to send it back to the pool.
- Check my sorting gives the score and names any misplaced items so they can be fixed and re-checked.
How It Works
The activity is built from your specification: category lines end with a colon, item lines list comma-separated items. Placed items are remembered by name, and checking compares each item's placed category against the category it was defined under โ which is why item names should be unique across categories.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can items belong to two categories?
Each item is checked against the one category you listed it under. If an item genuinely fits two groups, this activity will mark one of them wrong โ for such content, discuss it in class rather than sorting it.
What subjects suit group sort?
Science classifications, parts of speech, odd/even and prime/composite numbers, countries by continent, foods by food group โ anything with clean categories.
Why tap-to-place instead of dragging?
Tapping works on every device, including school touchscreens and small phones, where dragging small items is fiddly.
