Code Typing Test — Brackets, Symbols and All
Typing code is not typing prose. Half the characters are symbols living on the top row and around Enter, lines start with precise indentation, and a single wrong character breaks the program. Programmers, and students learning to code, need to practise that skill specifically — which is why this is its own test, not a mode of the general Typing Test on Loona Text Tools.
How to Use It
- Choose a snippet — short JavaScript functions, a Python function, or a SQL query.
- Press Start and type the snippet into the box, exactly — including capitalisation, symbols and the spaces at line starts. Enter makes a new line, matching the snippet's layout.
- The test ends automatically when your typing reaches the snippet's full length.
- Read your result: accuracy percentage, characters per minute, and WPM equivalent (correct characters ÷ 5 per minute).
How It Works
Scoring compares character by character at each position — the strict standard code demands — and timing runs from the Start press to the moment the final character lands. The WPM equivalent uses the standard typing convention of 5 characters per word, applied to correct characters only, so wild speed with errors cannot inflate it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my code speed so much lower than my prose speed?
Everyone's is. Symbols require reaching and shift combinations, and code is read in chunks rather than flowed. Professional developers often type code at 40–60 WPM equivalent while writing prose far faster — accuracy, not raw speed, is the professional metric.
Does indentation really matter?
In Python it changes what the code does; everywhere, it is how code stays readable. The test counts leading spaces as characters, like a real editor would.
How is this different from the Typing Test on Loona Text Tools?
That test measures prose typing (letters, words, sentences). This one measures the programmer's distinct skill: symbol-heavy, layout-sensitive exact typing. Different content, different scoring emphasis, different benchmark.
