Word Search Generator โ Your Words, Hidden in a Grid
Word searches are the friendliest form of vocabulary practice: students hunt for the exact letter patterns of the words they must learn, which quietly drills spelling while feeling like a game. Teachers have asked for this for decades; now any word list becomes a puzzle in seconds.
Word Search โ Answer Key
How to Use It
- Type your words, one per line โ at least 4, ideally 6โ15. Letters only; spaces and punctuation are removed automatically.
- Choose a grid size: 10 ร 10 for younger children, 15 ร 15 for a real challenge. Every word must be shorter than the grid.
- Generate: words are hidden in all 8 directions โ across, down, diagonal, and backwards too. If a word cannot fit, the tool tells you.
- Print the puzzle for the class, and print the answer key separately for yourself.
How It Works
The generator places each word on the grid in a randomly chosen direction, allowing words to cross where letters match โ just like hand-made puzzles โ retrying each word hundreds of times before giving up and reporting it. Remaining squares are filled with random letters. The answer key is rendered from the exact placement data, so it can never disagree with the puzzle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can words go backwards or diagonally?
Yes โ all 8 directions are used, including backwards and diagonal-backwards. For very young children, generate a few puzzles until you get an easy one, or use the answer key to check which directions appeared.
How many words can I include?
Up to about 20 on the largest grid works well. More than that gets crowded and some words may not fit โ the tool reports any word it could not place.
A word did not fit. What can I do?
Use a bigger grid, shorten the word list, or remove very long words (a word longer than the grid can never fit). Then generate again โ placement is random each time.
Is this good for spelling practice?
Very. Finding a word means scanning its exact letter sequence many times, which reinforces spelling patterns. Pair it with the Spelling Test on this site for the full loop: hunt the word, then spell it from dictation.
